Whether it's repetitive thoughts, out-of-control emotions, or struggling to change behaviors, these experiences are often rooted in the brain's wiring. “Stuckness" happens when your brain locks into familiar patterns of thinking, feeling, or behaving—often without you noticing. These autonomic responses are rooted in neural pathways that have been reinforced over time, turning them into automatic responses to stress or specific triggers. It’s your brain's way of conserving energy by relying on what it already knows even when it’s no longer helpful. This can manifest as anxiety or depression, or maybe it’s behaviors that you know aren't serving you, yet you feel powerless to change.
Emotional dysregulation is when your emotions feel like they’re in the driver’s seat, making it hard to stay calm or respond logically. In times of stress or perceived threat, the emotional centers of your brain (like the amygdala) can kick into overdrive, leaving you feeling overwhelmed, reactive, or completely shut down. Emotional dysregulation can make you feel like you’re riding an emotional rollercoaster, with extreme highs, lows, or even moments of numbness. These intense responses are part of your brain's defense system, but when they linger or become frequent, it can be exhausting and hard to change.
